The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Union Local #53 Joint Apprenticeship Program is committed to providing an adequate supply of trained insulation mechanics with the competitive skills necessary to meet industry needs now and in the future.

The goal of the apprenticeship program is to provide the highest level of training to apprentices, enabling them to obtain positions as fully qualified journeymen ready to meet the professional challenges of the insulation industry.

The program is structured for entry-level workers, and for insulation workers already employed within the industry that wish to upgrade their skills, and at the same time benefiting from membership in the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Union.

The apprenticeship program emphasizes on-the-job training and classroom instruction, through the use of textbooks and other course materials that give participants a thorough knowledge of the trade.  As an insulator apprentice, an apprentice will be certified through the Louisiana Department of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Abatement program; in addition he or she will receive Fire Stop Certification through the 3M Company, and OSHA-10 Safety Training Certification.

The training program is registered with, approved, and certified by the Louisiana Workforce Commission Office of Apprenticeship and the United States Department of Labor, Division of Apprenticeship Training.  The training program has been in operation since 1972.  The majority of journeymen currently employed through contractors signatory to the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Union Local #53 Collective Bargaining Agreement have completed the apprenticeship training and have passed the journeyman’s test.
